Evaluation

What have you been asked to do?
I have been asked to create a CAL programme with other class members to make a group and have been told to create a programme for a target audience. Before we made a start on creating the CAL programme we worked together as a group on what we wanted our CAL to look like and if the CAL suits the target audience.

What scenario did you choose?
The scenario that my group have chosen was the rocks and formations scenario. As soon as we picked our scenario we immediately work as a group and got started with creating our programme starting with the research.

Research
As a group we sorted out that if we all did a piece of research as an group so that as soon as we get to finish the research about rocks and formations the more time we can have at creating the CAL programme on Flash.

Planning
Before we were giving the choice to choose which scenario to work from, my group started to create a storyboard with all the scenarios and going into more detail into each scenario. I found creating the storyboards made it clear of what I had to do for the group that could help me work on the CAL programme.

Software
The software that we used while we were creating the CAL programme is Audacity that I used to create and edit the sound effect that was used when we the user presses another page within the programme.

Photoshop & Illustrator
Another software that we used while creating the CAL Programme to help create the images was Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop to help create JPEG images for the CAL programme as well as creating the images to help create the animation. We used Photoshop to help create the animation for the CAL programme but coming from the feedback that I got from our report that we could have used/created more images for the animation or use better images for the animation.

Flash
The software that my group used to create the CAL programme was Adobe’s Flash. Flash is a totally different from the last software that we used to create our own individual CAL programmes which we had to create the programme with Dreamweaver. I would have used an HTML software that would be better then Dreamweaver because I had little knowledge on Adobe Flash.

Premier Pro
Premier Pro is the software that we used to edit the video that we have on the CAL programme. The original video that we had planned to use for our CAL programme was too long and had some parts of the video was not in the text so we decided to shorten the video and keep the parts of the video that we needed.

Creating Buttons/Pages
My group didn’t just created buttons that would take people using to a different page wasn’t just a button but it was a rollover buttons that changes once the user’s mouse hovers over the buttons. The rollover colour that the user sees when the mouse hovers over the button is a darker colour then the default white font colour but not as dark as the black background.

Creating Animation
My group created a short animation that can be found in every page of the CAL programme and the way that we had created was create using 3 clip art images and the images fade in and fade out.  We created the animation with the help of using Photoshop and we all helped create the animation but the animation could use move images in the animation.

Linking Pages
I didn’t know how to link one page to another with adobe Flash so I couldn’t do much help with it so I watched how to link pages to each other so when I have to create something with flash in the future in case it is another CAL programme.

Adding Sound
We were told that we had to add a sound in our CAL programme. We went to the insert tab and import sound file so that the sound is in the library. The only thing that we had to do to add the sound into the programme is that we have to code the sound file in.

Editing Sound in Audacity
I haven’t used audacity before so I wouldn’t know to edit a sound file especially if that sound file will only play for about 1 second.  I haven’t used it before but I did used the software to change the sound file a little different.

Editing video in premier pro
We used the premier pro software to edit the video on the CAL programme by shorten the original video that will suit the target audience. I used the software before and I know some of the main features of premier pro as well as knowing how to cut bits of a video.

Importing Video
Importing the video is something almost the same to importing a sound file in adobe Flash and the same goes to adding the video in by code is the same as adding the code to add the sound in Flash.

Adding Action Script
I didn’t do much of the action script because I didn’t before we were giving the 3rd assignment while still in planning stages we were also practicing on adobe flash and while I was practicing with the action script it didn’t worked well with me so when it came to the 3rd assignment I didn’t get involved with action script.

Consistency of pages
The number of pages is that is on programme would be the correct amount of pages to have on a CAL programme. Having a CAL programme that has 5 or fewer pages would seem that the creators behind it don’t know what they are doing or what it is about and having to many pages would make the programme bored real quickly.

Time Management
The time management while I was working on this assignment is was that I would work on the work once I have been given the work so that I once I have finish off the work for the assignment I can finish off the rest of my assignments for when I come back from my weekend. If I didn’t had finish the night that I was given I would come in to school on Friday.

Working as a group
My time while I was working in a group was a good experience to work as a group and as well as working on Adobe’s Flash because I have little knowledge of using flash and I only used the software once during the 1st year of Level 3 but I couldn’t remember what I created while I was working on Flash.

Changes I made
There are an number of changes that I believe that could help improve the CAL Programme is that the images for the animation could use better images and I would also make the rock formations, volcanoes and famous landmarks contain more info on each page.

Likes/Dislikes
The stuff that I like about the CAL programme is the design layout of the CAL programme. It looked more professional looking and the choice of colours that we as a group chosen looked even more professional looking because blue and black looks better than any colour with black.

Future Improvements
The improvements that I think that could make the CAL programme is that the images for the animation could use better images and I would also make the rock formations, volcanoes and famous landmarks contain more info on each page. Another improvement that I believe could work is that the images find within the pages could use better images.

Did you achieve what you set out to do?
I believe that the CAL programme has reached what I believe is perfect for the target audience which is key stage 2 students. I think that if the improvements that I said should happen the CAL programme would look better.

Project Report

Project Report
What were you asked to do?
I was told to create a program that helps the target audience which are for students that would help them learn about the topic that I & my group have chosen to do. We were given a choice to choose which scenario we can focus our work on. The choices where:
1.       Cyber Bullying for age groups 14-16 year olds students
2.       Rock and Formations for Key Stage 2 students
3.       Learn what Dyslexia is & how to do improve the literacy for Key Stage 2 students
4.       Eating Disorders for age groups 10-14 year old students
5.       World Around Us for Key Stage 2 students
As a group we decided to go for the 2nd Scenario the rocks and formation application & that the target audience is for Key Stage 2 students. After that we decided to go and create an rocks and formations we made an start on the research.

Research
Our 1st piece of research was that we were asked to talk about the principles of multimedia which also asked us to talk about the key trends of multimedia and how it’s used in modern sociality. While I was working on the principles of Multimedia I didn’t had any trouble working on it.

Planning
I started to do the planning by creating two mind maps. One of the mind maps had the 5 scenarios as subtitles and had points about each scenario and tried to make more detail looking. The second mind map was going into more detail of the scenario that we decided to work on which in our case was the Rocks and Formations scenario. I try my best to make the mind maps looked very detailed so that we get closer to choose what our program will look like. Because that I was a member in a group I didn’t just do the storyboards I also did the HCI discussion that talks about what HCI is and why would we need it on our program.

Creating Buttons/Pages
For the application I helped created the pages for the rock and formation program helped with creating the Gemstones page and the Volcanos page that talks about all the different Volcanos that can be found from around the UK. The only problem that I encountered while I was creating the pages was that I the lot of info that I researched I wanted to use most of the info but I couldn’t use them all so I had to choose which research is needed for the program.

Linking the pages
I didn’t really know how to link the pages within the program so I had to do some research online to know how I can achieve this task without it breaking the program.

Changes you made
I did do some changes to the program then I ordinary had planned such as making the images in the Gemstones page have an bigger gap between the images and the text and I also shorten the video down using Premiere Pro because the full video was making the loading time to long throughout the whole program and give the video to the member of the group that was importing the video into the program. We also had to change the video format different because the default video format is MP4 and it didn’t doesn’t support MP4 files so we had to change it to a format that flash supports.

Adding Sounds
We also decided to include a sound in the buttons that once the button is pressed we would be able to hear the sound that it plays. We converted the sound from YouTube as an MP3 file and add the sound through the ActionScript and import the sound file.

Adding Video
I didn’t had a clue of how to import a video into Flash but I helped download the video that we used for our Flash from YouTube. The video is an medium range animation that would make the key stage 2 students want to watch it instead of the reading the gemstones

Adding ActionScript
We uncounted an problem because the drag and drop didn’t work correctly so we went online to figure out what the problem is and how we fixed the drag and drop quiz.

Consistency of Pages
The consistency throughout the whole program was very easy to maintain a steady layout that we created for the program as well as a perfect colour scheme and font style that we believed suit the program while we were finished creating the program. So there was nothing that shouldn’t been out of place when it came to the time while we finished creating the program and running it.

Working with Group Members
We didn’t had any problem with our groups attendance because every day we were in and every day we worked on the software every week from the middle of February to the beginning of May so we never missed an piece of work for the program.

Likes/Dislikes
The thing that I liked about creating while I was creating the program was that I liked the way that the program looked with the colours that we have chosen and that we followed the rules that what the HCI discussion that talked about in the assignment before creating the program which talks about the making the program easy to use and fun to use.

Software Used
The software that we used to create the program was Adobe Flash which is what we used to create the whole program and importing the video & sounds into the program. We also used Adobe’s Photoshop to create the animation that is included in the program in every page that can be find in the menu section of the program and as well as editing images. We also used the YouTube converter that we used to download the video and audio that we inserted in the program and we used Audacity to edit the sound file.
